A circular walk around the 3 peaks overlooking Cardiff, starting and finishing in Tongwynlais. This walk will take you up The Garth, Caerphilly Mountain and Craig yr Allt. This is approximately 13 miles or 21 kilometres and involves 750m of ascent (or 2,500 feet), mostly off road. It will be a challenge, even for experienced walkers and will involve rough mountain paths on open fell, forested valleys and crossing working farmland. During this tour of some of South Wales’ most beautiful scenery, the route will take you past historic landmarks, past the site of a coal mining disaster, over steep hills and across babbling streams. You will pass the 3 bears cave and we will even throw in a fairy castle for you to admire!
The purpose (apart from having a good time) is to raise funds for Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team. They are the team who cover the central area of Bannau Brycheiniog down to Cardiff and Newport and the central South Wales Valleys. They are entirely funded by voluntary donations and all team members give their time for free. They work with the police, the ambulance service and the coastguard to search for and rescue people endangered by accidents or natural hazards in difficult terrain and inhospitable environments. Running the team costs tens of thousands of pounds a year and we need to raise this sum every year to keep helping people.
