Limitless Trails – Beast of the Blacks 10, 20 and 40 Mile Trail Running Challenge
@ Llangynidr Village Hall
Mar 8 all-day
The Beast of the Blacks 10, 20 and 40 is a great challenge amongst some spectacular, harsh but stimulating trails within the Majestic Black Mountains of Wales. Attracting runners from the elite to the beginner you will not be disappointed by this event. The event will be marked with the added support of marshals. Generous cut off times of 5 hrs for the 10 mile, 8 hours for the 20 mile route and 16 hours for the 40 mile route will ensure that you can tame the beast. The 40 mile event will be a reverse of the 20 mile loop so whatever scenery you miss on the first lap, you can capture on the second lap.
The programme has 83 guided walks at all levels of length and challenge, plus the TM5 Challenge on Table Mountain, which is now an established favourite. There are 16 new walks, 9 linear walks, variations on familiar themes and some old favourites too, plus a fine programme of evening events so there’s something to suit you, whatever your preference.
Most walks have 20 places while others are restricted to lower numbers to suit the level of challenge. Our linear walks have 14 places as they require bus transport and we add this cost to the walk price, but these walks add a different dimension to the programme. The website will help you narrow down choices and pick your walks and events easily. It also allows us to respond as necessary to changing circumstances.
This year, CWF 2025 and the CRiC charity are fundraising for SARDA Wales, Search and Rescue Dogs in Wales. Everyone who is involved in SARDA is an unpaid volunteer and rely on donations from the public to provide the service that we do. Add a donation to your booking, and we’ll also be collecting at events during the Festival.

LLanbedr – Blaenavon: A classic, tough A to B ‘grassroots’ fell race taking in three major peaks in the South Wales Black Mountains.
The Three Peaks Trial is an organised challenge walk arranged each year in March by the Cardiff Outdoor Group. Since 2010 Longtown Mountain Rescue Team provide support with marshalls on all the mountain top checkpoints.
The Walk was first held in March 1963 and was designed for less experienced walkers who wanted to test their powers of endurance and skill at map reading. It is now the oldest challenge walk in the UK.
Over the years the event has been modified so in 2025 there is a choice of four other routes. The current four routes are:
- Platinum Route:This is a linear walk of about 17 miles and 5000′ of ascent from Llanthony Abbey to Abergavenny over Bal Mawr, Pen Cerrig Calch and Sugar Loaf. Entry to the Platinum Route is limited to 100. Although the Platinum Route is shorter than the Gold, the ascents are steeper and navigation more challenging, hence the higher grading.
- Gold Route: This is the original challenge, a circular walk of about 20 miles and 5000′ of ascent, which crosses over three prominent peaks around Abergavenny in Monmouthshire: Blorenge, Sugar Loaf and Skirrid. This route is never far from civilisation yet there is no obvious route so that concentration on map reading is essential to keep to the best route.
- Silver Route: This is a circular walk of about 15 miles and 4000′ of ascent. It follows the Gold Route from Abergavenny over Blorenge and Sugar Loaf, then descends back to Abergavenny.
- Bronze Route: This is a circular walk of about 10 miles and 2000′ of ascent. The route goes from Abergavenny to the summit of Sugar Loaf, descending by a different path.
The money raised in the 2025 Three Peaks Trial will be split between the Longtown Mountain Rescue Team, the National Trust, owners of Sugar Loaf and Skirrid Fawr, for footpath maintenance and at least one other charity (charity decided November 2025).
A leaflet for the event is available,Click Here For a webcam (updated every 15 minutes) showing Blorenge Click Here

All funds go to keep Longtown Mountain Rescue Team going. They were originally formed in 1965 to help people in difficulties within the Black Mountains. The role of the team has now expanded to include a wide variety of potential situations, where the police consider our assistance and expertise would be of benefit.

A circular walk around the 3 peaks overlooking Cardiff, starting and finishing in Tongwynlais. This walk will take you up The Garth, Caerphilly Mountain and Craig yr Allt. This is approximately 13 miles or 21 kilometres and involves 750m of ascent (or 2,500 feet), mostly off road. It will be a challenge, even for experienced walkers and will involve rough mountain paths on open fell, forested valleys and crossing working farmland. During this tour of some of South Wales’ most beautiful scenery, the route will take you past historic landmarks, past the site of a coal mining disaster, over steep hills and across babbling streams. You will pass the 3 bears cave and we will even throw in a fairy castle for you to admire!
The purpose (apart from having a good time) is to raise funds for Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team. They are the team who cover the central area of Bannau Brycheiniog down to Cardiff and Newport and the central South Wales Valleys. They are entirely funded by voluntary donations and all team members give their time for free. They work with the police, the ambulance service and the coastguard to search for and rescue people endangered by accidents or natural hazards in difficult terrain and inhospitable environments. Running the team costs tens of thousands of pounds a year and we need to raise this sum every year to keep helping people.
